The Hitopadesha, a collection of fables written in Sanskrit by Narayana Bhatt in 1100 or 1200 AD, drew much of its material from the Panchatantra. Though the Panchatantra is divided into five books Bhatt divided his work into four parts. The stories in this collecition are taken from Mitralabha and Suhrdubheda, Choice of Friends and How Friends are Parted. The third section takes stories from the Anwari-Suhaili, a Persian version of the Panchaantra written around 1500 A.D.
